China, Cambodia Deepen Strategic Cooperation in Security, Diplomacy Talks

(MENAFN) Top diplomatic and defense officials from China and Cambodia held their first high-level strategic dialogue in Phnom Penh on Wednesday, focusing on security cooperation, regional stability, and expanded bilateral ties, according to reports citing state media.

The meeting was co-chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defense Minister Dong Jun alongside their Cambodian counterparts Prak Sokhonn and Tea Seiha. Discussions covered political relations, defense coordination, and broader international and regional developments.

Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in law enforcement and defense, with a particular focus on combating cybercrime, including online gambling operations and telecommunications fraud. They also emphasized enhancing cybersecurity collaboration.

In their joint discussions, the delegations highlighted the importance of resolving regional disputes through dialogue and negotiation, while opposing unilateral actions and what they described as power politics. They also reiterated support for fair global governance and open international trade.

China expressed its readiness to deepen strategic ties with Cambodia, promote closer military trust, and advance cooperation frameworks aimed at shared security in Asia. Cambodia, for its part, reaffirmed its commitment to the one-China policy.

The Chinese delegation also met separately with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. During the meeting, Hun Manet reiterated Cambodia’s pro-China foreign policy stance and expressed interest in strengthening cooperation in sectors such as clean energy and infrastructure, while welcoming further Chinese investment.

He also pledged stronger efforts to combat cyber-related crimes and signaled readiness to work with China in multilateral forums to support international cooperation and multilateralism.

Wang Yi emphasized the importance of unity between the two countries amid what he described as a “tense and chaotic external environment,” and called for deeper collaboration on industrial development, agriculture, and initiatives aimed at improving Cambodia’s economic self-reliance.
